Abstract
The situation of the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land in the first half of the 18thcentury was good but it required constant vigilance. Despite strong opposition from the authorities of Turkey and the Orthodox Church, no holy place was lost. After many years of efforts, consent was obtained to renovate the church of the Holy Sepulchre. Another important achievement was also the confirmation of the exclusive right of the Franciscan Order to the birthplace of Christ in Bethlehem. For this reason in 1717 in the Bethlehem cave beneath the Altar of Nativity a silver star was attached to the marble floor with an inscription saying: Hic de Virgine Maria Jesus natus est. The significant accomplishments that can be attributed to the Friars Minor include the renovation of the roof of the Church of the Sepulchre of Saint Mary in the Kidron Valley (1721).
