Abstract
The frescoes in the church of Assisi are the masterpiece of Giotto di Bondone. This Florentine artist is a precursor of modern painting. Fascinated by Saint Francis and his life, he placed the Legend of Saint Francis on the walls of the sacred interior. Giotto was a pupil of Cimabuego, working in the Gothic era and much respected by Giorgio Vasari, who in fact had no sympathy for medieval art. The article shows the origins of Giotto’s frescoes in Assisi.
